Troubleshooting and Repair

GFCI Receptacles

Kitchens, bathrooms, outside, and basement receptacles are protected by GFCI receptacles. If a

circuit is not working in these areas its always a good indication that the GFCI receptacle is tripped.  When the “test” button is pressed on your GFCI receptacle, it is turned off. The “reset” button will turn it back on and restore power.

Tripped Breakers

Another reason why circuits tend to stop working is tripped breakers. Older electrical systems have become obsolete with todays power demands. Heaters, appliances, vacuums are just some of the common reasons breakers trip. When resetting a breaker make sure to push the breaker completely in the off position and then back to the on position. If you reset a breaker from a tripped position to the on position the breaker will NOT get reset and is a common mistake many people experience.

Outside

Water and moisture can turn into a dangerous situation when combined with electricity. Water is extremely conductive and it can be the path from electrical equipment to you if situations are not correct. It can also be a big reason why circuits are not operating correctly. A GFCI receptacle is designed to turn off in the case of exposure to moisture and water. They will remain off until it either drys off or the problem is located and sealed properly. This happens to a lot of outside circuits and any circuit near water.

Flickering Lights

Can be a poor connection within the lighting circuit or heavy loads turning on such as air conditioners and appliances. It could be a sign that your electrical service needs to be upgraded to meet the demand of your household.
